Roofing Installation Process
Full Tear-Off
- Remove all roofing materials down to the bare decking.
Decking Inspection & Upgrades
- Inspect the wood decking for damage.
- If the decking consists of spaced boards (e.g., 1x8, 1x10), overlay it with 7/16" OSB sheathing to meet modern code.
- Repair or replace any damaged decking.
Flashing Work
- Re-flash chimneys, skylights, and any other components as needed due to deck height change.
Underlayment Installation
- Install synthetic felt underlayment (more durable than tar felt).
- Apply ice & water shield (leak barrier) in valleys, around chimneys, flue pipes, wall flashings, and other water-prone areas.
Edge Protection
- Install drip edge around the perimeter of the roof (1.5" x 1.5" or 2" x 2", depending on code).
Starter Strip Installation
- Lay starter strip shingles around the roof perimeter, rated for wind resistance up to 130 mph.
Shingle Application
- Install architectural shingles (main lines: Oakridge, Duration, Duration Storm, Duration Flex).
- Apply shingles per manufacturer specifications and wind rating needs.
Ventilation & Accessory Replacement
- Replace or install ridge vents, pipe boots, and any necessary ventilation systems.
- Replace damaged chimney or flue caps as needed.
Ridge Cap Installation
- Install ridge and hip caps (standard or high-profile, depending on choice).
Cleanup & Safety
- Clean up all debris.
- Use a magnetic roller to pick up loose nails around the property.
- Advise homeowners on safety around construction areas.
Final Documentation
- Provide a certificate of completion.
- Supply Class 3 or Class 4 shingle certification for insurance discounts if applicable.
